Zimbabwe opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai has died in South Africa after a long battle with cancer, the vice-president of his Movement for Democratic Change party says.
"I can confirm that he died this evening. The family communicated this to me," Elias Mudzuri said.
Mr. Tsvangirai was a Prime Minister under the Mugabe regime from 2009-2013 after a unity government was formed following a violently contested election. Tsvangirai was only person with the popularity to potentially defeat former President Mugabe in an election.
He had been sick for a lengthy amount of time and seeking treatment in South Africa.
